Workshop 01: The Relationship between Biblical Authority & Worldview Contextualization

This is a 3-part workshop designed to introduce the basic tools necessary to understand and apply scripture to our lives. The bible reflects the character and person of God, as such it shapes our faith/doctrine as well as our practice/ethics. We shall answer questions such as how to discover the meaning of a given biblical text, how to perform sound exegesis and basic discourse analysis as well as create discourse outlines. Moreover, several pitfalls in understanding the message of scripture originates from what I call “flat-reading.” That is a way of reading the bible that does not account for its multi-faceted genre: historical narrative, poetry, law, gospel, letter, apocalyptic writing, lamentation and prophecy. Misunderstanding the genre of a communication will result in misunderstanding the author’s intent. For instance, when Jesus says “If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell” (Matthew 5:29) Should we read it literally? If we do, we would totally misunderstand Jesus’ intention. If, however, we recognize that this communication contains a hyperbolic statement (a sub-genre within a figure of speech), we would then understand Jesus saying that we should take extra ordinary measures to avoid temptation from our lives. But then why not Jesus say what I just wrote? That is because a hyperbole statement brings focus to the urgency and weight of the utterance than a mere propositional statement such as “avoid temptation at all costs.”

Classes are primarily taught in the Amharic Language but supplemented in English.
